Reporting to the Associate Director of Financial Aid, the Assistant Director of Counseling & Special Programs supports institutional enrollment and retention goals and oversees financial aid operations related to counseling and special programs in a manner that ensures compliance with federal and state regulations and university policies. Incumbent also supervises the department’s financial aid counselors.
 
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • At least three years of experience in student financial aid.
  • One year of experience supervising full-time staff.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with SCT Banner.

  • Considerable knowledge of the procedures for administering Tile IV aid and scholarships.

Job Summary
Program Management
    • Provides strategic leadership and oversight for special programs, including Athletics, Study Abroad and the Competency-Based Education (CBE) program, and ensures effective implementation, continuous improvement and ongoing maintenance.
    • Supports the Assistant Director of Scholarships & Grants with scholarship and grant processing as needed.
    • Serves as primary liaison to third-party vendors to coordinate and align efforts that support CBE program goals.
    • Acts as the main point of contact for CBE-related matters across campus.

 

Supervision and Leadership
  • Manages financial aid counselors in achieving the department’s goals and objectives.
  • Provides day-to-day supervision, guidance and input on performance evaluations.
  • Ensures staff are well-trained and consistently apply institutional policies and federal and state regulations when advising students and families.
  • Contributes to the hiring and professional development of team members, supporting both onboarding and advancement efforts.
Service and Support
  • Counsels students and parents on all aspects of financial aid via in-person meetings, telephone and email.
  • Handles more complex customer service issues before requesting management intervention.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Represents the Office of Financial Aid at campus events, including new and transfer student orientation.
Policy, Compliance and Reporting
  • Assists the Director in developing and implementing policies and procedures related to the program area.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state and institutional regulatory requirements.
  • Assists with federal and state audits.
  • Completes weekly reports.
  • Makes and revises financial aid awards and resolves issues.
